Setting up a kiosk
Configure kiosk behaviour, pair a device, and launch the customer-facing check-in screen.
A kiosk is a dedicated device in your pharmacy — a tablet at reception, a screen near the consulting rooms — that lets customers check in for bookings or start a walk-in without staff help. Kiosks run in Light's web app with a simplified interface: just "I have a booking" and "I'm here for a walk-in".
Configuring kiosk behaviour
Before pairing a device, decide how kiosks at your site should behave.
- Open Kiosk Settings
Go to Settings›Kiosks. The Kiosk Settings card is at the top.
- Edit the settings
Tap Edit. The Kiosk Settings sheet opens.
- Decide visibility and PIN
- Show connection indicator by default — when on, the kiosk's network/connection status is visible. When off, staff have to tap the header to reveal it. Keep off for customer-facing kiosks where you don't want a visible status icon.
- Require PIN for the connection sheet — protects kiosk admin controls (pairing, unpairing, status) behind a site-level PIN. Recommended if customers have physical access to the kiosk.
- PIN — 4 to 8 digits. Leave blank in the edit sheet to keep the current PIN; enter a new value to change.
- Save
The settings apply immediately to every paired device.
Pairing a device
Every physical kiosk needs to be registered and paired with your site.
- Create a device entry
On the Kiosks page, tap Create Kiosk Device (or the equivalent action on the devices table). Give it a recognisable name — "Front counter tablet", "Consult room kiosk".
Optionally add allowed network ranges (CIDR) to restrict which IPs this device can pair from.
- Issue a pairing code
From the device row, start the pairing flow. A Pair Device dialog opens with a QR code and a numeric pairing code. A countdown in the dialog shows how long both remain valid — reissue if it runs out before you've paired.
- On the device
On the kiosk device's browser, go to the pairing URL (shown in the dialog) or scan the QR code. The device connects and the Paired badge appears on your admin screen.
- Launch the kiosk home page
On the paired device, navigate to your kiosk home URL — copy it from the Copy kiosk home URL button on the Kiosks page. The customer-facing welcome screen loads.
Customer-facing interface
Once paired and on the kiosk home page, customers see:
- Your pharmacy's name and logo
- A headline (customisable per site)
- Two buttons: I have a booking (booking lookup) and I'm here for a walk-in (walk-in registration)
The kiosk admin controls are hidden — tap the header to reveal them (gated by the PIN if one is required).
What a kiosk doesn't do
- Take payment — kiosks don't handle customer payment
- Complete encounter forms — clinical work still happens in the staff interface
- Replace a receptionist for every task — complex inquiries still need staff
