Recording a Meds by Injection – ODT
Add a Meds by Injection (ODT) service, record the injection, and claim it through PPA Online for eligible Section 100 opioid dependence treatment medicines.
Meds by Injection – ODT is the in-pharmacy administration of an opioid dependence treatment injection, claimable through the Pharmacy Programs Administrator (PPA) for selected Section 100 opioid dependence treatment medicines.
This guide covers ODT (opioid dependence treatment) injections only. Meds by Injection also handles general injectables, which aren't covered here.
Before you claim: your pharmacy must manually register for the ODT Community Pharmacy Program on the PPA Portal, and PPA must be connected in Light. Without that registration, Light can't prepare ODT claims. See Connecting PPA.
Program rules and forms
Claiming is available for the opioid dependence treatment medicines listed under Section 100. Follow the program rules:
- ODT Community Pharmacy Program Rules
- ODT program overview (PPA)
- Section 100 opioid dependence treatment medicines (PBS)
You must obtain written patient consent before providing the service:
Keep any hard-copy forms securely, or attach them to the encounter in Light. Retain records for the period required by the Program Rules.
Adding the service
There are two ways to start:
- From Services – go to Services, select Add, choose Meds by Injection (ODT), then select an existing customer or add a new one.
- From the customer – open the customer's record, select Services, then choose Add service and select Meds by Injection (ODT).
Recording the injection
Open the encounter and record the injection you administered – the medicine, the dose, and the date and time of service – along with any notes. Choose Complete when you're finished.
Claiming
Once the encounter is completed, Light assesses it against the claiming rules and displays it in Claims for eligible Section 100 ODT medicines.
ODT claiming is integrated – submit and declare the claim from the Claims screen and Light lodges it with PPA directly. There's no separate step in the PPA Portal.
If a claim can't proceed, Light flags the reason – for example, the patient has no Medicare or DVA card on file, or no date of birth.
