How-to

Adding a variant

Create a variant of an existing offering — same service, different rules.

A variant is an offering that shares a service with another offering but differs on price, duration, eligibility, or claim program.

Common uses:

  • Flu vaccine — CVCP (funded) vs Flu vaccine — private pay
  • Flu vaccine — adult vs Flu vaccine — child (different durations, different vaccines)
  • Consultation — new patient vs Consultation — follow-up (different durations, different prices)

When to use a variant vs a separate offering

  • Variant — same underlying service, different rules
  • Separate offering — different service entirely (flu vaccine vs COVID-19 vaccine are different services, not variants)

If you're not sure, start with a variant. Variants can be promoted to full offerings later if they diverge too much.

Creating a variant

  1. Open the parent offering

Go to Settings›Services and open the offering that will act as the parent.

  2. Open the Variants tab

If the offering doesn't have variants yet, you'll see an empty state.

  3. Add a variant

Tap Add, then pick the same service the parent uses. The form defaults to "follows parent" — the variant inherits everything (duration, price, availability, resources) from the parent.

  4. Override what's different

Turn off "follows parent" on the fields that need to differ. Common overrides:

    • Price — for claim-funded vs private variants
    • Duration — for age-specific timing
    • Availability — for time-limited programs (e.g. CVCP only runs during a specific window)
    • Resources — if only certain staff can deliver the variant
  5. Set the variant code

A short code that identifies the variant — typically the claim program (CVCP, NIPVIP) or audience (adult, child). This is what appears on the booking and on claims.

  6. Save

The variant appears under the parent in the Services list and in booking flows.

Offering groups

When an offering has variants, it may be marked as an offering group — a parent that exists only to hold variants, where the "plain" version isn't directly bookable. On the Services list and variants table, the parent shows an Offering group badge.

Example: a Vaccine Clinic offering group with variants Flu, COVID, and Pneumococcal. Customers always book a specific vaccine, never the generic "clinic".

There's no in-app toggle to convert an existing offering into a group. The flag is set during setup (typically by the person configuring your site initially, or by support) — if you need an offering converted, contact support.

Following the parent vs overriding

On every variant field, you choose:

  • Follow parent — the variant uses the parent's value. Change the parent, the variant updates too.
  • Override — the variant has its own value, independent of the parent.

For services with many variants (10+ flu vaccines for different age groups and funding), "follow parent" is usually the right default — change the parent's availability once and every follower updates.
